The National Science Foundation would see its budget slashed to levels not seen in two decades under the White House’s 2026 funding request.
Office of Management and Budget Director Russ Vought on Friday asked Congress to approve $3.9 billion for the science research funding agency, a cut of nearly 57 percent from current spending levels.
The last time NSF’s budget was that low came in fiscal 2001 — before the arrival of podcasting, blockchain and gene-editing technologies.
The $4.7 billion in cuts would mainly be focused on research related to climate change, clean energy and “woke social, behavioral and economic sciences,” according to the White House.
