President Donald Trump is reining in use of criminal enforcement measures, a move that could limit EPA’s power to go after polluters knowingly breaking the law.

Trump signed an executive order Friday that says “criminal enforcement of criminal regulatory offenses is disfavored.”

The order aligns with Trump’s push to reduce burdens on “drastically overregulated” businesses by requiring agencies to explicitly identify which criminal enforcement authorities it plans to use.
