The Washington-based Ocean Conservancy is laying off nearly two dozen employees.
The ocean conservation group informed 21 employees last week that their positions are being eliminated, according to an internal email sent to staffers by the group’s CEO Janis Searles Jones.
The layoffs, Jones said, are the result of factors including “significant shifts in the policy and fundraising environment, unprecedented volatility, and unprecedented pressure on the philanthropic sector.”
The staffing cuts come as the Trump administration has directly targeted the conservation group, with President Donald Trump’s recent budget request calling the organization’s agenda “harmful” to the U.S. fishing industry.
