Amtrak is laying off hundreds of staffers as part of a plan to trim expenses by $100 million a year.
The news comes less than two months after Amtrak’s CEO resigned under pressure from the Trump administration and amid a multibillion-dollar construction effort by the passenger-rail corporation.
Amtrak will cut 450 positions, including some vacant slots, after reviewing its structure and finding ways “to better align resources with the important work we are doing for America,” a spokesperson said in a statement.
“This workforce adjustment, combined with other recent cost-saving actions, will help Amtrak save $100 million annually,” the statement said.
